January 2007
"I want to be the white
man's brother, not his brother-in-law"
Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)
Weather Watch:
Cloudy and cold (1,2) with heavy Snow and
high winds (3,4,5,6). Fair and very cold
(7,8,9,10) with more Snow or sleet
(11,12,13,14). Showers and cool (15,16,17)
returning to fair skies but very cold
(18,19,20,21). Again, fair but not so cold
(22,23,24). Light snow showers (25,26,27,28)
ending the month fair and cold (29,30,31).
Full Moon:
the Full Moon for January occurs on the 3rd
at 8:57 AM EST. It is often referred to as
the Hunger Moon due to the great difficulty
finding food in cold and temperate climates
during this winter month. It is also called
the Wolf Moon because of many wolf packs
that would wander close to Native American
villages looking for food during this month.
Special Notes:
2007 marks our 211th year of continuous
publication! We hope that you will continue
to honor us with your patronage and support
as we work hard to improve The Almanack and
make it more relevant. Change is always
difficult but sometimes it is necessary so
that traditions can continue.
With both regional
and national support, we are sure that our
humble publication will be around for
another 200+ years! Some winter auto tips:
clear snow away from your car's exhaust
pipes before starting. This will prevent
dangerous carbon monoxide from seeping back
into the car. Never warm up a car in an
attached or closed garage even if the door
is open. Of special note, on January 4th,
1821, the very first native-born America
saint,
Elizabeth Ann Seton died in
Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Holidays:
Carry the good will expressed during the
recent holidays into the new year and try to
keep those New Year's Resolutions. It is
very difficult to do but if you set
realistic goals, you will succeed! Civil
rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. was
born on January 15, 1929. In 2007, the
official day set aside for his remembrance
(the third Monday of January) just happens
to fall on that exact date. Please remember
to honor him on his day and reflect on the
great social change he brought about in this
country.
The Garden:
Begin planning your spring gardening
activities during the remaining winter
nights. Buy an extra calendar when they go
on sale. Keep one for garden planning and
scheduling of mulching, fertilizing,
potting, and plantings. Look ahead and note
last projected frost dates and mark down
when to plant seedlings indoor. Check out
usna.usda.gov/Hardzone to determine local
hardiness. Collect nursery and seed catalogs
now and remember to place your orders early.
And now is the time to spoil those indoor
plants! They not only brighten up the house
but they also rid indoor air of nasty
pollutants. Take care of them and they will
take care of you!

only as good as the intent to keep them"
