Private John Sponcler: Letter for Proof of
Service
Submitted by
Gary Zeller
Baltimore Md. Oct 15 1890
I would state the I am personally acquainted
with John Sponcler. He was a member of Co. C of my Battalion,
January 1st 1864, and was detailed by my order to go
with Capt. A.M. Hunter of Co. C on a scouting expedition through
Louden Co. Va. On or about January 1st 1864.
Capt. Hunter had a fight with Mosby’s Command,
Rectortown Va. In which John Sponcler was badly wounded in the
body near the hip; he having been left with the enemy for some
weeks, and he never was able to do much service after his return
on account of his wound. He was a good soldier, the bravest of the
brave; always with the advance and doing his duty nobly.
I hope the Government my reward this worthy
case.
I certify that I have no interest in this claim
directly, or indirectly.
