Convention & Visitors Bureau seeks volunteers for 150th anniversary

(3/13) In 2012, the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau began preparations for increased visitation during the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and Gettysburg Address.

Beginning this May, the CVB plans to expand a program that features visitor information staff walking around town to talk with visitors and answer questions.

"We heard positive feedback on this program from visitors and businesses alike in 2012," said Norris Flowers, President of the Gettysburg CVB. "These volunteers were able to be more accessible and help travelers that otherwise may not visit one of our information centers."

These volunteers wear recognizable vests and are highly noticeable as they walk throughout the downtown area. In 2013, this program will expand to all weekends and every day during the 10-day commemoration period, June 28 through July 7.

Also, as part of this expansion of visitor information services for the 150th anniversary, the Gettysburg CVB is planning to increase visitor information staff and hours at its locations on West Middle Street and the Historic Gettysburg Train Station. The Gettysburg CVB will also set up satellite visitor information tents during the 10-day commemoration.

"Adams County is expected to see a significant increase in visitors this year, and the CVB wants to make sure it’s staffed to answer visitors’ questions, as well as provide encouragement for visitors to do more and stay longer," said Flowers.

The CVB plans to expand its staff to answer phones and visitors’ questions as they plan their trips from home as well. Visitors often need help finding places to stay, determining what times to visit and what to do once they arrive in Adams County.

Already, the CVB works with numerous volunteers to help address visitors’ needs and answer questions. More are needed, however, as Gettysburg nears the 150th anniversary of the battle and the Gettysburg Address in 2013.

People interested in volunteering are asked to visit the CVB’s administration office at 571 W. Middle St., Gettysburg, email membership@gettysburg.travel or call (717) 334-6274.
