Hamiltonban approves draft budget

The Hamiltonban Township Board of Supervisors approved the draft of the proposed 2012 budget package at their November 1 meeting.

The general fund budget, slated for final approval at the board’s December 6 meeting, was tentatively approved in the amount of $1,228,000 (which includes a $500,000 grant, causing the anticipated revenue to appear inflated).

The current tax rate will remain at 1.2359 mills. The last time the mill rate was changed was in 2010 for the 2011 budget to reflect the results of the county-wide re-assessment.

No tax hike in Fairfield

The Fairfield Borough Council unanimously approved its 2012 general fund budget at their November 22 meeting in the amount of $166,410.

As a result of the amount approved, there will be no tax increase, and the council voted to retain the current rate of 1.1575 mills.

The last time Fairfield Borough raised its tax rate was for the 2011 budget to reflect the change in the value of a mill that occurred as a result of the county-wide re-assessment.

CV advises residents on hunting

Carroll Valley Borough Mayor Ronald Harris advised borough residents at the borough Council’s November 15 meeting to report questionable hunting practices to the police.

While he advised hunting is legal in the borough, there are state regulations in place that govern how close to structures various weapons can be used.

Anyone wishing to report a suspect violation should contact law enforcement, such as the state Game Commission at 814-643-1831, or call 911.

Walmart Supercenter review continues

The Straban Township Planning Commission will continue to review plans for a Walmart Supercenter-anchored shopping center proposed on York Road (Route 30) not far off the Route 15 exit.

The proposed 72.55-acre shopping center would be located approximately 20 minutes north of Emmitsburg.

The plan calls for 469,892 square feet of total retail space, which would include a Walmart Supercenter as the anchor business. The balance of the square footage would be taken up by 13 to 15 additional businesses, including stores, restaurants, banks and others.

The review before the township Planning Commission will take place at their 7 p.m. December 21 meeting. The township has received county Planning and Development comments on the project. to be further addressed.
