Music Gettysburg Presents Organist
Martin Jean to Play Bach
(10/1) One of the finest organists to play either side of the Atlantic Ocean, Martin Jean, of Yale University, returns October 10th to Music, Gettysburg! concert series. He will play a full concert of great organ
composers including music by Bach, Buxtehude, and Albright in one of the anchor performances of the 30th Anniversary season.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, takes place at 147 Seminary Ridge in Gettysburg, at the Seminary Chapel, at 4pm October 10th.
Dr. Jean is Dean of the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University and Professor of Organ at the School of Music. Prior to assuming his position at Yale, he served as Associate Professor of Music and University Organist at Valparaiso University in Indiana and as Associate Professor of Music at
Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan where he studied with Robert Glasgow and was also a holder of the Regents' Fellowship. Additional coaching has been with David Craighead and Russell Saunders.
Featured in this concert will be the fun 13 part parade of music and verse for organ and a narrator by William Albright, who composed and wrote the piece, with some textual contributions by Eugene Haun. Gettysburg theatre faculty member, George Muschamp, will perform the narration.
Martin Jean has risen to the highest ranks of the world's concert organists and is recognized widely as a brilliant, warmly communicative artist and readily appealing personality. As the winner of two of the most prestigious organ competitions in the world, he has concertized extensively throughout
the United States, Canada and Europe. Music, Gettysburg!’s Gerald Christianson recalled Jean’s 2006 appearance in Gettysburg as "Spectacular...Martin Jean was, as always, more than magnificent. We have no doubt but that Mr. Jean is among a handful of the finest organists today."
Jean will perform on the 36 rank Andover Tracker Organ – Opus 84, a gem of an instrument for the northern European sound of Bach and Buxtehude.
Music, Gettysburg! is a free concert series featuring international and local musical artists supported by both the Lutheran Theological Seminary and the wider Gettysburg community. For more information about this and other concerts in the 2010-2011 Music, Gettysburg! schedule, please call
