Zorzal Brings the Best of Spanish and Latin American Traditions to Music, Gettysburg!

Music, Gettysburg! welcomes Zorzal and the music of Spain and Latin America to the Music, Gettysburg! concert series Sunday, October 19, 2008 at 4pm.

Led by its artistic director Lynn Gumert, Zorzal (Spanish for Wood Thrush) is a vocal and instrumental ensemble performing Spanish and Latin American music from the 12th century to the present. The ensemble places special focus on works that reflect how musical elements from Spain are influenced by and influence other musical cultures, including those from African, Native American, Sephardic, Arab and other European sources.

The concert, free and open to the public, takes place at the chapel of the Lutheran Theological Seminary, 147 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg, PA.

Zorzal features a vocal quartet, recorders, guitar, harpsichord, viola da gamba, and Latin American, Arab, and African percussion. We perform in a variety of Spanish dialects as well as in Ladino (Sephardic Jewish) and Native American Quechua (Inca) and Náhuatl (Aztec). And the concert will include traditional music by a variety of composers from the 13th through 20th centuries, traditional sephardic arrangements, and works by Godoy, Montserrat, El Sabio, and Fernandes.

The ensemble was founded in 2001 in south-central Pennsylvania and has performed at a variety of venues, including formal concerts, outdoor cultural and arts festivals, educational programs in libraries, and at national and international academic conferences. Local performances have included ArtsFest and the South Allison Hill Cultural Heritage Festival in Harrisburg; Gettysburg College, the Adams County Heritage Festival, and Gettysburg Public Library in Gettysburg; and The Historic Peace Church in Camp Hill. Our first CD will be released in December 2008.

Regular parking lots are available despite the roadwork underway on the Ridge, according to seminary officials, but sidewalks are under construction and concert goers should be extra careful coming to and from the concert.
