(7/12) At its July 11 meeting, the Emmitsburg Town Council approved modified historic wayside exhibits for Saint Joseph College and Emmitsburg High School.

The total of 14 wayside exhibits aim to highlight historical significance throughout the town as part of a long-term historical walking tour undertaken by the town, according to town grants administrator Madeline Shaw.

The Emmitsburg High School wayside exhibit will be number 13 in the Town’s historic walking tour. The old high school building, which now houses the town offices and library, served as the local high school for nearly 46-years before Catoctin High School was built.

Town staff worked with the Emmitsburg Alumni Association and former teacher Joyce Bruchey in the development of the exhibit. The town anticipates installation in September with a tentative ceremony for the high school’s 100th anniversary September 17.

On a related note, the Emmitsburg Library is also preparing a high school display in preparation of the 100 years of history and seeks photographs from former students and modern town activities.

The St. Joseph’s College wayside exhibit will be number 14 and is the last exhibit the Town is planning to create. The marker will be placed outside of the National Emergency Training Center.

St. Joseph’s College was a 4-year liberal arts college for women from 1809 to 1973 when baccalaureate degrees were an uncommon and extraordinary event for women. The campus is now the National Emergency Training Center.

Panel installation and unveiling is expected in September.
