(6/7) Emmitsburg’s newest community deputy
is Deputy Harold Jones. He’s been patrolling Emmitsburg’s streets since
February.
“I love what I do,” Jones said. “There are
not many jobs you can say that about, but I love my job.”
The 28-year-old deputy sheriff has been
with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office for 3.5 years, though he hasn’t
always been a deputy sheriff. When he first applied for the FCSO, it was past a
deadline so he was advised to take an opening in the corrections side of the
sheriff’s office.
“It has always been a goal of mine to be
in law enforcement and that got my foot in the door,” Jones said.
He became a deputy sheriff the following
year and found himself patrolling up around Emmitsburg often so the switch to
become one of the town’s community deputies felt like a natural move.
“I wanted to be a part of the community
more rather than just driving through it,” Jones said.
Now as a community deputy not only will
residents see him driving through town, but he can also be seen on bike and
foot patrols.
Though he and his wife now live in the
north county area, Jones is a Linganore High and Frederick Community College
graduate. When’s he’s not on the streets of Emmitsburg, he’s enjoying time with
his wife or playing golf.
“I like to spend time with my wife because
on the weeks I work evenings, I don’t really get to see her,” Jones said.
Emmitsburg has three community deputies
who are contracted through the town to specifically patrol the town and act, in
essence, as its police force. The other community deputies are DFC John
Bartlett and DFC Richard Gast.
